A few days ago Bloomberg reported that Chinese Military managed to put tiny chips inside the motherboards which were used by companies like Apple, Amazon and US Government too.
The companies were using the motherboards made by Super Micro, a US based company whose products are manufactured in China. The Chinese Military managed to put tiny chipset inside the motherboards which were manufactured in China potentially allowing personal information to be stolen.
This report, however, was denied by Apple, Amazon, and Super Micro and the Chinese government also published an official statement where they called themselves a “resolute defender of cybersecurity.”
In this matter, the UK’s Cybersecurity agency, the National Cyber Security Center also known as NCSC backed US tech giants Apple and Amazon in their denials of a report which claimed that Chinese Military managed to penetrate into their servers.
The NCSC recently released a statement in which they publicly and openly sided and backed Apple and Amazon in their denials.
It cites that:
“We aware of the media reports but at this stage have no reason to doubt the detailed assessments made by AWS and Apple,”
“The NCSC engages confidentially with security researchers and urges anybody with credible intelligence about these reports to contact us.”
The denials by Apple and Amazon were significant and important as these companies rarely comment to deny any reports or rumors published about them but the statements by both of these companies were crucial and both companies openly denied the report.
Amazon said in a blog post that:
“there are so many inaccuracies in this article as it relates to Amazon that they’re hard to count.”
Apple denied the report saying:
“We are deeply disappointed that Bloomberg did not consider that its sources might be wrong or misinformed.”
As backed by the NSCS too, the companies might be telling the truth that no data has been stolen, however, if their claims are false then it is as serious as you get.
